Feasibility and usability evaluation of a gamified fatigue management mobile application for persons with Multiple Sclerosis

Background

Fatigue is one of the most debilitating symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), affecting up to 80% of patients and significantly reducing their quality of life. Traditional fatigue management strategies, including medications and behavioral interventions, have shown mixed results. Mobile health (mHealth) solutions offer new opportunities for self-management, but many existing apps lack personalization, usability, and clinical validation.

Research

This study evaluates the feasibility and usability of More Stamina, a gamified mHealth application designed to help people with MS manage their energy levels. Over a 60-day pilot study with 20 participants, the app was assessed for engagement, usability, and impact on fatigue awareness. Findings indicate that power users, those who used the app most frequently, reported higher fatigue levels but also better quality of life, suggesting that structured energy management could improve daily functioning. Additionally, participants reported using the app to communicate their fatigue patterns with family members, helping loved ones better understand the unpredictable nature of MS fatigue.

Potential Impact

The More Stamina app shows promise as a digital tool to support MS patients in tracking fatigue, planning activities, and communicating their energy levels with family and healthcare providers. By offering a visual representation of energy levels, the app facilitated conversations between patients and their families, fostering greater understanding and support. With further development and larger clinical trials, this technology could be integrated into MS care strategies to enhance patient self-management, improve daily functioning, and strengthen family support systems.
