Sustainability

Modern neuroscience research generates substantial plastic waste, consumes significant amounts of water, and demands considerable energy. At FutureNeuro, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact while exploring how climate change itself affects people living with neurological conditions.

Professors David Henshall and Norman Delanty were invited to lead task forces within the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Climate Change Commission—an initiative focused on advocating for sustainable practices in both research and clinical settings. As part of this collaboration, we co-produced The Brain and Climate Change, a short film that asks how rising global temperatures are impacting our brains—and what we can do about it. Featuring a blend of expert insights and personal experiences, the film highlights how environmental challenges intersect with neurological health, with a particular focus on conditions like epilepsy. It calls for urgent action to protect brain health in an increasingly unpredictable climate.

My Green Lab

In recognition of our commitment to sustainability, the FutureNeuro laboratories at RCSI and Beaumont Hospital were awarded My Green Lab Certification in 2022. This Platinum Level certification reflects outstanding efforts to reduce the environmental impact of laboratory operations.

Looking ahead, our goal is to extend this accreditation and conduct a comprehensive audit of our carbon footprint and sustainability practices across the Centre—ensuring that neuroscience research can be both cutting-edge and climate-conscious.
