Background
This study focused on gaining a molecular understanding of a mutation in a gene called Claudin-5. The mutation can cause patients to have an increased risk of developing schizophrenia during their lifetime.
Research
We used a range of molecular genetic techniques to identify a protein called Pumilio-1 that appears to very tightly control the production of the claudin-5 gene. In so doing, it can have an impact on the vast capillary network in the brain.
Potential Impact
Identifying the molecular cause of diseases such as schizophrenia and epilepsy will allow us to design more potent drugs aimed at treating these conditions.
