Background
Although various genes have been linked to Autism spectrum disorder we lack a good understanding of which genes are more or less active than normal.
Research
In this study, we analysed gene activity in the brain of a genetically-altered mouse that mimics some of the features of ASD. We found various changes in gene activity – both ‘on’ and ‘off’ – including some that regulate the shape of contact points between brain cells and how the brain and immune system communicate.
Potential Impact
The findings offer some new insights into ASD and point to potential new directions for diagnosis or treatment.
