Background

Focal epilepsy is typically unifocal, but in some cases can arise from multiple discrete foci. This is an important distinction in patients with drug resistant epilepsy.

Research

We characterised a large cohort of patients with drug resistant multifocal epilepsy, and highlight that this diagnosis is difficult to make, particularly in the outpatient setting.

Potential Impact

Our research highlights the challenges in making a diagnosis of multifocal epilepsy and the value of Video-EEG. It also provides information about the outcomes in this group to help counsel patients.
