Fergal O’Brien

Prof Fergal O’Brien is a Professor of Bioengineering & Regenerative Medicine, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation, and Head of the Tissue Engineering Research Group in RCSI. With a background in mechanical engineering and a PhD in bone mechanobiology, he excelled as a Fulbright Scholar at MIT and Harvard Medical School. Since 2003, Fergal has published nearly 300 articles, filed 20 patents, supervised over 50 doctoral students, and earned three European Research Council Awards. Elected to the Royal Irish Academy in 2018, he’s received numerous accolades, including the RAMI Silver Medal and the Marshall R Urist, MS award for sustained contribution to regenerative medicine. Recognized on Stanford University’s list of the world’s top 2% most cited scientists in 2022, Fergal continues to drive innovation in his field.
